About with Friends is a charity that has been working with children, young people and adults with learning disabilities for 17 years. Some of our members also have physical or sensory disabilities and all behaviours that challenge.  Our services are all designed to offer members support to live the lives they choose. These include a varied programme of social activities, respite holidays, supported living and a work skills service which provides real work opportunities within the community. Find out more at

We are based in Cromer but our work takes us around the county. In August 2017 the Care Quality Commission published its report on our services. We were really pleased with the result – we were rated as ‘Good’ in all aspects. You can read the report here and look on our website.

We are passionate about delivering high quality services to our members. Our friendly environment enables members, staff, volunteers and trustees to work co-operatively together as a team. Our staff benefit from a wide range of ongoing professional training and support.

Job Title: Supported Living & Outreach Manager Salary: Point 23 to 30 £24,921.00 – £33,462.30  
Reports To: Chief Executive Officer & Registered Manager Location: Based in Cromer, but will be required to travel
Service: Supported Living Hours: 37.5 hours includes evenings and weekends

To ensure that the Supported Living service delivery is of high quality at all times whilst developing further opportunities for growth and best practice throughout the operation.  To ensure the service is member-led and that it fulfils the individual needs of both the members and their families. To develop our Community Outreach programme – supporting people with learning disabilities in their own homes and in the community, ensuring that our care delivery and policies meet CQC standards. To also be part of the On call duty system
To work closely with the Registered Manager and the Strategic management team to identify new business and grow the supported living & community outreach service
To lead on our Supported Living service to support staff to deliver the services our members need
To promote a philosophy of putting member needs first at every opportunity and embedding the mission, culture, values and behaviours of AWF
Remain aware of local priorities & needs to ensure AWF are well placed to deliver to individuals with learning disabilities
To link with individuals, other agencies and commissioners – to build relationships and a reputation for a reliable response and delivery of a high quality service.
To work at all times to ensure our delivery meets within CQC guidelines
To take referrals and undertake assessments, including individual risk assessments
To ensure procedures are followed for the timely and accurate recording of administration functions eg. record keeping, report writing, team meetings, rotas, sickness reporting using our HR Database
To ensure the correct allocation of staff cover is maintained to ensure a quality service provided
To ensure individual service level agreements are in place, with regular reviews and that members are engaged in meaningful outcome based activities
To liaise with parents, guardians and professionals specifically reporting any risks where appropriate
To ensure members are encouraged and supported to be involved in the running of their home, development of services and involved in selection of staffing
All staff are involved as necessary and that any changes to policy and working methods are communicated to all staff
To ensure compliance with regulatory body requirements and identify improvements in practices and take action as appropriate
Ensure work is carried out in accordance with legislation and regulations governing Safeguarding Adults
To work face to face getting to know your members and cover shifts when needed
Financial Management
Budget monitoring controlling spending in line with the allocated budget
To ensure all procedures relating to finance such as petty cash, members monies, mileage and expenses are implemented and adhered to across the service
To work with the Finance Manager to ensure transparent and accurate income collection
Relationships Maintain links and proactively develop networks with, other professionals and interested parties in order to promote the service and increase membership
People Management
To coach and line manage direct reports in line with CQC procedure
To ensure staff induction and any associated training needs are implemented
Organise staff and other resources to ensure calendar of delivery is consistent and meets contractual requirements undertaking personal delivery of service provision when required
H&S AND CHARITY POLICIES The jobholder must ensure they comply and are up to date with, all About with Friends policies & procedures in relation to health and safety, having specific regard to adult and child protection and safeguarding, confidentiality and data protection and follow correct reporting procedures. The jobholder must ensure activities are delivered within AWF health and safety guidelines and that risk assessments are in place
HR MANUAL:  The jobholder is responsible for familiarising themselves with and adhering to all AWF policies, procedures and risk assessments
Relevant qualification or practical experience of working with adults with learning disabilities, including those with complex needs and behaviours that challenge
Experience of managing staff
An understanding of the Supported Living model of care
Demonstrable experience of providing personal care / support for individuals An understanding of assessment and management of risk
Commitment to a service which provides support to vulnerable people
Strong organisational and planning skills
Strong people skills including the ability to negotiate/liaise  with customers parents and carers, internal and external contacts
Able to adapt to ever changing priorities and respond positively and proactively to change
A demonstrable knowledge of safeguarding, disability and equality issues
Able to keep accurate records Demonstrate high  levels of patience, tolerance and empathy when dealing with challenging individuals
Hold a current driving license, and have use of own transport, willingness to drive AWF minibus on the odd occasion
Have a commitment to training and development for self, team and members 
Able to work on own initiative or as part of a team and accept guidance as appropriate
Willingness to work out of hours with occasional weekend and evening work, sleep-ins and on-call duty
Good general education
Level of IT skills to fulfil the role requirements
Experience or ability to use a variety of communication tools
Able to work across disciplines and  undertake a variety of tasks
Experience of attending multi-disciplinary care reviews and an understanding of commissioned services
Ability to devise and present in-house training programmes

AWF offers and amazing, caring, supportive group to both special needs adults/children & their families. Since N joined you he has been to some fantastic places, met some amazing friends and done activities we would never have thought he’d do. You have helped our family life improve by making N a happier, more content, confident boy.

Just wanted to say a big thank you to you and everyone else that supported H on the recent trip – she had an amazing time. I enjoyed look at the Twitter feed to see what you had been up to.

I’ve got my life back

I just cannot thank you enough for taking K my daughter so that she could have fun with her friends on holiday in Milton Keynes, […] it made her extremely happy.

Selfishly for me it gave my wife a much sought after period of respite exhausted after 16 years of constant care. Complete respite is dependent upon the knowledge that your child is in safe professional caring hands. The ‘about with friends’ staff impress me because they display such enthusiastic vocational attitudes towards their care.

Thank you for taking K to Milton Keynes on holiday, it made her extremely happy. Selfishly, it gave my wife a much sought after period of respite after 16 years of constant care.

We cannot tell you what AWF means to us as a family – a lifeline, a light in the dark. Something that has offered our daughter equality, to have a social life and really support us as a family.

Having spent many years in school with little improvements in I’s behaviour and speech, in just a few weeks with you the improvements in both areas are plain to see. Please continue as you are, as life at the moment for us as a family is greatly improved because of your input.

He really enjoyed himself, had loads of fun and told us all about the cable cars, stepping stones, cinema, meals out, etc.! We would be very grateful if you could pass on our sincere thanks to all the staff who organised the holiday and supported our youngsters to enable them to have such a wonderful time. We are also very grateful as we, ourselves, were able to enjoy a short break in Paris, which was wonderful and recharged our batteries!
